 Description:

Feedback and evidence from the District's current professional development and coaching model used in grades K-3 indicates the approach is effective. As a result, the District plans to expand the model to support classroom instruction in English Language Arts throughout the K-12 continuum.  These entities will support the work under the oversight and direction of the Academic Office:

  1. Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI), to provide literacy coaches and coaching support for all K-5 teachers across all District elementary schools.  Job-embedded coaching is designed to support teachers in implementing evidence-based classroom instruction to increase student achievement, and to assist school leaders in identifying and providing additional supports to improve the efficacy of literacy  instruction.  As part of this work, CLI will also provide additional professional development for new and returning teachers during a week-long summer institute for K-5 teachers and principals.
  2. American Reading Company, to provide customized professional development sessions, including the cost of co-development, facilitation, and all training materials for K-5 teachers and principals.
  3. Scholastic, to provide customized professional development sessions, including the cost of co-development, facilitation, and all training materials for teachers in grades 6-8 and teachers of High School English I and II.

This will allow the District to deliver large-scale, comprehensive supports in literacy instruction for thousands of teachers and principals, at all schools throughout the District, as the District progresses in developing internal coaching and professional development capacity to meet the District's Anchor Goals.
