Policy 139 - Supporting Language Accessibility for Parents and Guardians Whose Primary Language is Not English (NEW)

Purpose

The Board of Education (“Board”) is committed to improving communication with and promoting access to School District of Philadelphia (“District”) language accessibility services and activities for parents and guardians whose primary language is not English.

Authority

To further promote the goal of creating safe and welcoming schools for all students and families, the Board directs the District to define the means by which it makes families and staff aware of the availability of language access services and to enhance and support parents and guardians and District staff in accessing District services for parents and guardians whose primary language is not English.

Delegation of Responsibility

The Board directs the Superintendent or their designee, through the Office of Family and Community Engagement (“FACE”), to develop administrative procedures to further promote communication with parents and guardians whose primary language is not English about the educational programs and opportunities in the District, as well as their students’ academic learning, and to aid District staff in helping to identify, offering and/or directing those parents and guardians to these resources.  [1][2][3][4]
