Action under consideration

The Administration recommends that the Board of Education ratify the execution and performance of a contract by The School District of Philadelphia, through the Superintendent or his designee, subject to funding, as follows:

With: Peekapak

Purpose: To provide a Social Emotional Curriculum to our students using ELA Standards utilizing books and activities online

Start Date: January 15, 2020

 End Date: June 30, 2020

Compensation not to exceed: $2,500

Location(s): Lowell, James R. School

Description: Peekapak is a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum for Kindergarten through 5th grade, designed to support educators and parents in developing the social, emotional, and literacy skills of children in early elementary school. The program is a research-based curriculum that includes:  ten original interactive stories at four different levels, audio for levels 0-2, Spanish and Portuguese translated books for level 0-1, and 80 classroom lesson plans with printable templates and digital home extensions for students with their family.  The program also allows teachers to track student-specific engagement (i.e., number of logins, duration in storybooks, questions answered, ELA standards demonstrated).

Peekapak invited Lowell Elementary to be a part of an impact study which would allow the school to receive Peekapak’s goods and services at a 50% discount. In an effort to take advantage of the savings and maximize the opportunities students have to engage in the program, the administrator moved forward without obtaining prior approval. This ratification is required due to a mistake by the administrator not understanding the correct procedure for engaging new contractors. In the future, it is understood that the engagement of contractors by the school must be done through proper means, including prior LCA or Board of Education approval.
