At the February 27, 2020 Board of Education meeting, Action Item No. 35 was approved to allow the Office of School Safety to contract with the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) to provide school safety officer training in alignment with PA Act 67 of 2019 training mandates for school safety personnel. The Office of School Safety and Office of Climate and Safety was awarded a multi-million dollar grant by the Pennsylvania Commission of Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) to support school safety initiatives, including NASRO training for all School Safety Officers. That grant was accepted under Action Item No. 8 at the February 27, 2020 Board meeting. This Action Item envisions three amendments to the original authorization of the Office of School Safety’s work with NASRO - (1) total funding amount, (2) extension of duration of work, and (3) change in funding source from general operating budget to grant funding. This Action Item increases the authorization amount to contract with NASRO from $150,000 to $175,000, to use the full amount of the grant awarded for this training with NASRO. This Action Item also increases the duration of the contract and work with NASRO from the original end date of September 30, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Additional time is sought to offer flexibility in the scheduling timeline of the work given logistical and scheduling challenges presented by the COVID-19 closure. This Action Item also adjusts the funding source to grant funding instead of general operating budget.
