Title: Acceptance of a Grant from United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey ($75,000)

 The Administration recommends that the Board of Education authorize The School District of Philadelphia, through the Superintendent or his designee, to accept a Grant as follows:

United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey 

To pay the partial salary and benefits for a full-time Partnerships Coordinator position within the Office of Strategic Partnerships 

 Grant Start Date:  7/1/2020

 Grant End Date:  6/30/2021 

 Amount up to: $75,000 


The United Way is providing funds for a staff position in the District's Office of Strategic Partnerships for the sixth straight year focused on corporate engagement with our schools.


The Partnerships Coordinator cultivates and establishes corporate partnerships with schools, seeks to move those partnerships from single, event-oriented activities to longer term partnerships focused on and aligned with District and school goals and functions as a liaison with the United Way's education team and agenda.


United Way's direct investment in a District staff person furthers their goals and objectives in collaboration with the District and avoids duplication of efforts and furthers our respective missions. Since the grant's inception, and as a result of the grant funded position, the Office of Strategic Partnerships has facilitated over 10,000 volunteers benefiting over 80,000 of our students in over 190 schools in a variety of projects such as beautification, mentoring of students, supply drives, career days, the provision of STEM kits to 80% of our 8th grade science classrooms, and more.  We provide a mid-year and final report to United Way and meet with their staff regularly to ensure that respective goals are aligned and outcomes maximized.
