The Administration recommends that the Board of Education, acting in its capacity as Board of Directors of Philadelphia Intermediate Unit No. 26 (IU 26), authorize IU 26, through the Executive Director or his designee, to accept a Grant, if awarded, as follows:

Purpose:

To accept the Safe School Targeted Equipment and Program competitive grant for school safety and security enhancements for non-public schools

Grant start date: 10/18/2019

Grant end date: 6/30/2020

Amount up to:  $600,000

All grant awards to non-public schools will be paid out of the aggregate amount not to exceed $600,000

Description:

The IU is required to submit grant applications for school safety and security enhancements upon request of a non-public school or combination of non-public schools located within the IU to the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Safe Schools. These grants assist non-public schools by providing funding for programs that address school violence, and for security planning and purchase of security-related technology which may include metal detectors, protective lighting, surveillance equipment, special emergency communications equipment, electronic locksets, deadbolts and theft control devices, and training in the use of security-related technology. An award for each non-public school that applies for the competitive grant may be up to $25,000 for an equipment grant and up to $20,000 for a program grant.  Twenty-seven non-public schools submitted applications to IU 26.
